Piaget’s constructive learning theory describes learning
as an active construction process in which people learn through their own activities.
The purpose of the instructor is to help student construct meaning. Constructivists
believe that the individual is “active” and that individuals seek cognitive
equilibrium or “self-regulation” in order to understand and categorize
information.
The learning process can be broken down into an
organized construction process. The
learner begins with disequilibrium which is the major source of
motivation. Next, the learner adapts to
his or her environment and organizes knowledge through the equilibrium process
of either assimilation or accommodation. A learner assimilates when they fit
new information in to their existing knowledge structures. However, when a learner can’t assimilate the
learner will accommodate by modifying their existing knowledge structures to
fit reality.
